Le Pocket PC est soit un PDA (personal digital assistant) soit un système d’exploitation pour PDA. (a) PDA. Lancé par la société Microsoft en avril 2000, le Pocket PC est un PDA qui utilise d’abord le système d’exploitation Windows CE. Le Pocket PC permet la lecture de livres numériques sur le logiciel de lecture Microsoft Reader, lancé à la même date dans ce but. (b) Système d’exploitation. En octobre 2001, Windows CE est remplacé par le système d’exploitation Pocket PC 2002, qui permet de lire des livres numériques sous droits, avec gestion des droits par le Microsoft DAS Server (DAS: digital asset server). En 2002, la lecture est également possible sur le Mobipocket Reader et le Palm Reader. Le Pocket PC équipe aussi de nombreux PDA lancés par d’autres constructeurs. Il équipe 25,7% des machines vendues en 2002. L’autre "grand" système d’exploitation pour PDA est le Palm OS (operating system), qui équipe 55% des PDA vendus en 2002. -
